About speaker:

Lexa Meyer has much experience in both managing the first and largest permitted kelp hatchery in Alaska and as a mariculture researcher and educator. Since 2019, Lexa has overseen the operations in commercial kelp hatcheries and is currently operating her own hatchery in Kodiak, AK and plans to grow over 150,000 ft of seeded line for numerous farms this fall making this hatchery is one of the largest in North America. She has participated in numerous Alaskan kelp farming studies and serves as faculty at agency sponsored kelp farming training workshops hosted by agencies such as the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation, Alaska Sea Grant, and Green Wave.

Alaska Ocean Farms is owned and operated by Alf Pryor and Lexa Meyer. The husband-and-wife team started their farming business in 2017, farming kelp in Kodiak on over 100 acres of farming leases. AOF specializes in the growing of large brown kelps in the open ocean and the production of high-quality kelp seed line and plans on expanding into oyster cultivation. AOF has been on the forefront of Alaska’s burgeoning mariculture industry and supporting its development through participation in numerous publicly funded research projects, developing and teaching farming and nursery training courses, and through the development of novel technology and equipment for farms and hatcheries.
