About speaker:

Skye Steritz is a 4th grade teacher and kelp farmer in Eyak/Cordova, Alaska. Skye and her partner, Sean, started Noble Ocean Farms at the start of 2021 to improve food security, human health and marine ecosystem resilience through the cultivation of local kelp species. At their farm, they prioritize operating in a responsible and ethical way.

Skye has years of experience in community engagement, organizing, writing, research, activism, environmental planning, and youth education. She has served several Native-led non-profits in roles involving public relations, program management, and advocacy.

Before transitioning into teaching in Cordova’s public elementary school, her formal training was in the field of Water Resources Policy and Management - with a focus on Conflict Management and Diplomacy. She worked with the International Centre on Water and Transdisciplinarity (CIRAT), under the auspices of UNESCO, to publish a portion of her thesis in a book entitled Water, Sharing and Peace Culture. Through trainings and graduate courses in three different countries, she practiced facilitation and mediation.

Skye was formerly a coordinator for the nationally-renowned Stream Watch volunteer program to protect Alaskan salmon and watersheds on the Kenai Peninsula and has also directed educational environmental science camps for children.
